Before You Leave
Address change

  • Post Office, give a forwarding address
  • Your charge accounts & credit cards
  • Magazine & newspaper subscriptions
  • Investment & retirement accounts
  • Relatives & friends

Bank

  • Transfer funds, arrange checking & banking accounts in new area
  • Arrange for any needed credit references

Insurance

  • Auto, Health & Life insurance, notify of new address
  • Apply for rebate on current homeowners insurance policy

Utility Companies

  • Electric, gas, telephone, water & garbage services
  • Apply for final readings & refunds on any deposits made
  • If cable or satellite, arrange for transfer of service

Medical, Dental & Prescriptions

  • Ask for copies of any needed medical records from your doctors, dentist & optometrist. Transfer any needed prescriptions, eyeglasses. Obtain birth records, etc...

Religious, Civic Organizations, Schools

  • Transfer memberships, get letters of introduction
  • Get any needed family religious records
  • Get school records & request a transfer of records to new school

Pets

Ask about regulations for licenses, vaccinations, tag, etc
Plan for transporting pets.

Don't Forget To...

  • Plan the use of your foods, to empty the freezer, refrigerator
  • Clean rugs before moving and have them moving-wrapped
  • Clean clothes before packing them
  • check with the moving company regarding insurance coverage, packing & unpacking, arrival day, etc...
  • Leave behind appropriate instruction manuals

On Moving Day...

  • make sure you have enough funds available to cover your traveling expenses, gas, lodging, food...
  • carry important documents & expensive items such as jewelry yourself
  • let relative or close friend know your route & schedule. Use this person as a message headquarters
  • double check closets, drawers, shelves, attics & basements
  • leave all old keys & garage door openers needed by new tenant or owner w/ relative or Realtor

At Your New Address...

  • obtain cashier's check necessary for closing the real estate transaction on your new home
  • check on the electric, gas, water, phone service & cable TV or satellite TV. service for the new home
  • Check to see if you have mail waiting for you
  • get driver's license with new address
  • register to vote at new address
  • if moving out of state, register car & obtain any needed city stickers
  • register kids in school
  • arrange for medical services, new doctor, dentist, optometrist..
